New York's Harvest Labor

Author: New York State Interdepartmental Committee on Farm and Food Processing Labor

Prior to 1942, no one had been greatly concerned with the migrant problem in New York. For more than 30 years, migrant workers worked in unsatisfactory and sometimes deplorable work situations. New York State's Farm and Food Processing Committee was established to stimulate and coordinate the migrant labor activities of each department and agency. This research document describes the different migrant worker conditions that The Committee assisted in changing and developing. Areas include: Recruitment and placement of labor, transportation, housing, schooling, child care, water supplies, health services, and labor law.
