Migratory Farm Workers in the Atlantic Coast Stream

Author: Larson, Olaf F.
Date Published: 1960

A study in 1957 was conducted in New York to compare with a similar study made in 1953 to determine changes in composition, employment, migration practices, and other related aspects. Between the two study periods, marked improvements had been made in harvesting machinery, especially the transition of the mechanical bean picker. Changes also occurred in legislation and in administrative procedures of public agencies at state and national levels. Results: More emphasis on training and supervision are suggested to maintain or increase worker productivity. Use of migrant workers' time can be improved by actions of employment services, employers, crew leaders, and by workers themselves. Educational work on the Social Security program is much needed. Attention needs to be given to the effects of crew size, camp size, and camp management.
