Barriers to Effective Understanding

Author: Sam Schulman
Date Published: 1967

This research document addresses the issue of misunderstanding rather than understanding of different cultures among members of the 'helping' discipline such as teachers, ministers, labor union representatives, etc. Schulman asks the following questions to address this growing problem: Who are we? Who are they? What are the dynamics of our common contact? How can we resolve, remedy, or ameliorate the misunderstanding that exists between us and, consequently, our interrelationships? Schulman argues that it is our chore to find better way of serving our people and to do this as efficiently as we can. Through our understanding of migrant culture we can find ways to aid that will lead to cleanliness, preventive medicine, a greater commitment to religion, a greater effort to improve children's education, a greater understanding of birth control, a better use of public and private agencies available to them for their own betterment.
