This research article examines the current labor system of the US fruit and vegetable industry; it supports temporary jobs, encourages subcontracting for management and recruits workers in a manner that results in the chronic oversupply of labor. Fortunately, the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act (AWPA) has emerged as an effective tool for overcoming the sweatshops in the fields.
