This research article tells of a slavery case in Immokalee, Florida, the tomato capital of the US, among tomato workers. Lucas, a recent immigrant, was living with another immigrant who charged him for terrible accommodations, meager food and access to water. He also threatened to beat him and eventually did when Lucas said he'd discuss the conditions with authorities. This is only one case among many that occur annually in Immokalee.
