This report describes the conditions faced by Louisiana sugar cane workers as they struggle to break out of the cycle of poverty and debt, ignorance and misery. It also includes discussions on how American consumers subsidize the sugar industry with tax dollars and toleration of bad conditions for workers. The report is based upon a survey of more than 900 workers who were interviewed at home and at work in the nine Louisiana parishes where sugar cane cultivation is concentrated.
