A Sustainable Bounty: Investing In Our Agricultural Future

Author: Washington State Farmworker Housing Trust
Date Published: 2008

As a collection of demographic information, this farmworker survey of Washington State addresses the lack of statewide data on farmworkers' housing needs and gathers information from the farmworkers' perspectives. Over the course of the 2006 growing season 2,845 one-on-one interviews were conducted in the 14 principal agricultural counties that employ 95% of Washington’s farmworkers, which provide extensive information about their needs. The research findings revealed high incidence of cost-burden, substandard housing conditions, overcrowding and homelessness among farmworkers interviewed. Authors call for a significant number of new housing units, rehabilitation of existing units and rent subsidies to improve these conditions.
