Farm Labor Conditions On Organic Farms In California

Author: Strochlic, Ron
Date Published: 2008

This study identifies farm labor conditions on organic farms in California and is based on a telephone survey of a variety of 300 organic farms throughout the state. The findings provide an overview on wages, benefits and other workplace conditions, as well as differences between different sized farms and farm-level benefits of positive farm labor conditions. Results show that entry level field workers' starting wage was between $6.75 to $15 an hour and slightly over one third of farms offer health insurance to some or all of their employees. Two in five respondents reported offering housing assistance and overall findings show that organic growers appear to offer better wages and offer profit-sharing bonuses.
