North Carolina Growers' and Extension Agents' Perceptions of Latino Farmworker Pesticide Exposure

Author: Rao, Pamela
Date Published: 2004

Pesticide safety and education is not effective when workers do not follow guidelines, do not understand guidelines, or find them too time consuming while harvesting food in extreme weather conditions of hot and cold. The growers are responsible for providing a safe work environment, but many of them do not communicate with workers to understand how often safety measures are applied. Researchers found that growers think that workers are being reasonable in using safety precautions and that the media is exploding the issue. However, research shows that farmworkers are being exposed to chemicals and suffering health consequences.
