Migratory Labor In New York State: Are There Alternatives?

Author: Montero, A.M.
Date Published: 1966

This report presents a portrait of problems faced by migrant farm workers in New York State. The report discusses that at least three-quarters of the 50 states relied heavily on migrants to meet peak agricultural labor needs for certain crops, notably cotton, sugar beets, and fruits and vegetables. In 1964, a ranking of states in terms of the number of domestic migrants employed at peak showed Michigan first, then California, Texas, and New York State. The document talks about migrant streams, local labor supply, southern agriculture, recuritment of migrants, seasonal demand, age, sex and occupational background of workers, and deterrents to employment among other topics.
