They happen when there's a brief disturbance in the way the brain's electrical system works. Vagus nerve stimulation uses regular pulses of electrical energy to prevent or interrupt these electrical disturbances in the brain. The electrical signals to the vagus nerve come from a thin, round pulse generator or battery about the size of a thin pocket watch. The device is usally implanted under the skin of the person's chest wall or armpit. The surgeon places the VNS pulse generator.
