Domestic Violence Training Series Parts 1&2

Author: Health Resources and Services Administration
Date Published: 2000

This two-part broadcast video series is intended to raise awareness of issues surrounding domestic violence and to provide a mechanism for community-based health care providers to receive high quality education and training about domestic violence. The first video, "Lessons," is intended to raise awareness about domestic violence as a central issue in health care. In this broadcast, viewers learn about the dynamics and prevalence of domestic violence, and are introduced to issues of screening, identification, assessment, safety planning and referral in a manner that is culturally competent, respectful and relevant to the communities in which providers work and practice. The second video, "Community Partners," introduces the viewer to the steps and techniques providers and clinics can utilize to begin, build or participate in a coordinated community response to domestic violence. As in the first broadcast, we will benefit from listening to and asking questions of domestic violence experts from around the country. These experts will lead us step-by-step as we develop the capacity to forge meaningful community strategies to combat domestic violence. The team approach to violence prevention and intervention, basic strategies of community outreach and community organizing, and challenges and strategies that can be utilized when looking at institutional change are explored during this video. Tips on how to start building a Coordinated Community Response (CCR) in your own community, as well as safety strategies for both patients and staff are also included. Health care providers can use this 2-session video series to learn more about the many issues involved in diagnosing and treating domestic violence. The videos can also be used to train and educate clinic staff, and to catalyze community concern and involvement. Information provided in this video, and links provided in the HRSA/OMH website may be used to develop training materials, and to design community-specific programs for domestic violence survivors. It is intended to be a guide that can be adapted to your community's particular needs.
