The Use of Health Aides in Migrant Health Projects

Author: Hoff, Wilbur
Date Published: 1970

Resource that describes how the various migrant health projects throughout the country have begun to use health aides which are individuals who represent the migrantory worker themselves. These are actual farmworkers who are being employed to bridge the cultural gap between the migrants and professional staff, to improve comminications between these groups, and to help deliver health services more effectively to migrant workers and their families. The booklet looks at the 5 major phases essential in using auxiliary health personnel effectively. These include initial planning, recruitment and selection, training, work supervision and evaluation. It also provides recommendations for better use of health health aides within migrant health projects. The recommendations identify the various component parts in each of the five phases and describe their development in a logical time sequence. It is hoped that health program staff will find this format easy to follow and will adapt it as needed to fit conditions in their own locality.
