Newspaper series: For nine months, The Palm Beach Post explored the roots of modern-day slavery. Reporters and photographers traveled to destitute Mexican villages, crossed the desert with a smuggler, rode across the U.S. with illegal immigrants, found new claims of slavery, uncovered rampant Social Security fraud, and found that Florida's famous orange juice comes with hidden costs. The Real Cost- Part Three in the series contains the following articles: 1. That Glass of OJ is Squeezing Back written by Jane Daugherty- This article looks at the price of Orange juice, divides the costs, projects the labor cost for farmworkers and talks about the hidden cost involved in producing OJ. Hidden cost due to the assistance given to migrant farmworkers with health care, public education, and law enforcement. 2. Machine Harvest Steadily Growing written by John Lantigua and Jane Daugherty- Florida is developing machines to harvest oranges that are used for making juice. This mechanization in FL Agriculture is projected to replace migrant workers in 10-15 years. Cost of machines and the damage to trees are currently two factors that hinder mechanization. 3. In Capitol, Reform Hits Stony Group written by Christie Stapleton-This article discussed Rep Marty Bowen, Rep Frank Peterson, and Butch Colhoun's roles in the bills in the FL senate-Slavery Bill, House Bill 1253, and the pesticide bill. 4. Sealed Trailer in Texas Pays in Widows' Tears written by Christine Evans- The story of a immigrant leaving home in Mexico traveling to the US to find work to provide for his family. During the journey, 19 immigrants are killed.
