Rural Communities: Legacy and Change

Author: Ohio University
Date Published: 1991

The video focused on 4 rural communities, and how what they do for a living affects their life and future generations. In one coal mining community, the living as a coal miner is past down to future generations. The lady on the video had a grandfather and father who were coal miners and then she became a coal miner. Although she was a coal miner, she doesn’t want any of her sons to become a coal miner. In another community, the children didn't want to learn the past of their family. They just wanted to learn for the future. In another community, a black man took his family in a restaurant. They told him they wouldn't serve to colored people. He just wanted to show his kids what it's really like out in the world, and to just get used to it. In another community, what brought them pride and joy was their land. Land will always be there, and no one can take it away. Land is something that is passed on for generations. Farming is another thing that is passed on. The love of the land is motivation for the hard work they put in daily. Another community was about leaving the roots behind, and trying for a better life than their parents or grandparents. In the end, there is no free life. All is controlled by the law. Throughout the video, the one constant focus was that you do with what you will with respect and loyalty. Available in DVD format.
