No Time To Be A Child

Author:
Date Published: 1996

The video is about three kids trying to break the ties to poverty. The first woman, aged 16, was living on welfare along with her mother and other siblings. She hated the fact that her family was on welfare, and how others viewed her. She wanted more than anything for her mother to listen to her own advice and get a job. The girl made it into college and was motivation for her mother. One of the boys was a migrant farmworker. He would help his family make a living, and then would go to school to get an education. He wanted to become an architect and had high hopes for the future. Being a migrant farmworker was a hard way to live. His family was always moving never getting settled. His parents could not read and write, and the harsh weather conditions made working very stressful. Workers were more at risk for infectious diseases and dangerous working conditions. The other boy was 16 and homeless. He and his mother were always looking for jobs and staying in shelters. His mother started doing drugs and drinking so she had to go to rehab. The boy found out his mother wasn't going to rehab, but instead hanging out in a hotel with his step father. He soon became custody of the system, but his classmates made a campaign for him to return to school and live in a foster home. All of these kids are making their way out of poverty. The welfare resources are lowering compared to 25 years ago. Available in DVD format.
