Migrant Labor

Author: CNN
Date Published: 1995

This video is about migrant labor, and the different aspects of agriculture and farmworkers. The farmworkers travel during the seasons. They become so used to it that they begin to like farming. A farmworker will bring his wife and children along to help. The family gets in about 60-80 baskets a day of vegetables to make money. On a good day, they might receive $150. Weather affects when and where they work, and also if they make money. Most mothers bring their children because they can't afford day care. Farmworkers work in two of the most dangerous fields; agriculture. They get injuries from machines and have lower back pain among other illnesses and diseases. Most workers don't have time to see a physician or get follow-up examinations so most clinics open up shop in the fields. They test mostly for diabetes and hypertension. Their diet consists mainly of fatty foods, and a lot of convenient store foods. The clinics enjoy working in the fields because there has not been one time where nothing has gone undetected from the workers. They are now setting up Catholic migrant schools where the teachers (nuns and lay workers) travel with the kids during the agricultural seasons. They hope to give a better opportunity to the kids for the future. Available in DVD format.
