Hard Luck Harvest

This video is divided into 5 parts. Part 1 examines the harsh living conditions that migrant farmworkers face. Housing usually fits a dozen workers and the conditions are unfit for humans to live in. No air conditioning, heat, water, beds, and the walls are held together with tape and cardboard. Part 2 looks into the practice of individuals who run a migrant farmworker "ring". They get them work and pay them, but still take out a percentage of their pay and take out rent for poor housing. It also discusses the need for proper certification. Part 3 discusses the legal problems of migrant farmworkers. Barriers, including legalization and language, make the court processes more difficult. It also discusses the need for contractors to be held liable for illegal works and workers injuries. Part 4 discusses H2A where Mexican workers can come to the U.S. legally to work for a few months and then return to their jobs back in Mexico. Although expensive, many contractors prefer to do it the legal way. Part 5 discusses the attempts to educate migrant farmworkers and the barriers surrounding it. Available in DVD format.
