The Free Trade Agreement: Mexican American Perspectives

Author: Romo, Ricardo

As Congress and the Administration prepare to take up the issue of a proposed Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, leaders in the Mexican American community have already begun to express legitimate concerns about the potential effects of new trade relations. To discuss these issues, The Tomas Rivera Center sponsored a gathering of 31 scholars, researchers, and business and community leaders, all with expertise in trade issues or Latino concerns. Although participants recognized that the proposed FTA will involve all three nations in North America, the discussion centered on those specific issues related to the United States and Mexico. These are the issues which will likely have a greater impact on the Mexican American community in the Southwest.
