Curanderismo: Mexican Folk Healing and Holistic Health

Author: Avilia, Elena
Date Published: 1991

Curanderismo is the traditional art of healing the whole person by integrating herbs, massage, and ritual prayer. Styles of the practice vary with in influence of the surrounding and dominant culture, making the body of the ritual and technique unique (i.e. Indian as opposed to Catholic). Little is written or known about techniques by the dominant culture. Three main sources are considered as its beginning: 1) Indian Medicine, 2) Spanish Medicine and 3) Black Medicine influences. Also, it goes into the Curandero's concept of medicine and well-being and locations of treatment centers with Curanderos.
