Project Vida Sana is a community-based health promotion project for Hispanics in North San Diego County developed by Vista Community Clinic. The project is funded through a contract with the State of California Department of Health Services, Health Promotion Section via the Prevention Block Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (contact no. 91-12738). The goal of the project is to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases among the adult Hispanic population. Project Vida Sana's objectives focus on reducing cholesterol/saturated fat in the diet and increasing aerobic exercise. Hispanics are at risk for cardiovascular disease due to poor dietary and exercise habits. The project targets low income Hispanics between ages 18 and 35, which represents 58% of the Hispanic population in North San Diego County. This age is modeling dietary and exercise habits for its children. It is this age group that can be most responsive to positive change in dietary and exercise practices. This manual provides information on development, implementation and evaluation of the Vida Sana point of purchase grocery store intervention and restaurant campaign. The objective of the interventions is to increase knowledge about, availability of, and accessibility to healthy food choices for Hispanics. Each section includes program descriptions, timelines, staffing and resources, lessons learned, sample materials and evaluation tools.
