Public Health Concerns in the Exposure of Grape Pickers to High Pesticide Residues in Madera County, Calif., September 1976

Author: McClure, C.
Date Published: 1978

This report describes an incident in a grape field in Madera County, CA in which several farmworkers were exposed to organophosphorus pesticides. Between September 8 and 10, 80 grape pickers working in a vineyard were treated for nausea, vomiting, and weakness at a local hospital. Actions by various local agencies prevented further exposure to organophosphorus residues to more than 400 grape pickers working in the vineyard. Investigation revealed high foliage residues of diaflor. It concludes that poor communications between employer and the workers, employer and the regulating agencies, and physicians and regulating agencies contributed to the illnesses. It recommends improving communications through education and training.
