The MESA Environmental Health Resource Manual

Author: Rural Community Assistance Program
Date Published: 1992

In November 1987, the Migrant Health Program of the US Department of Health and Human Services convened an environmental work group composed of health practitioners and community development specialists from around the country. The environmental conditions of migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFWs) were confirmed to be poor by this group. The problems they reported included the following: non-existent or dilapidated housing; insect and rodent infestations; water supply poor in quality and low in quantity; unsanitary wastewater disposal facilities; inadequate solid waste disposal; unsafe use of pesticides; lack of handwashing facilities in the fields; and hazardous working conditions. This document addresses five of these environmental factors influencing the health of MSFWs: water, sanitary waste disposal, field sanitation and pesticides. The manual presents information on the following: a description of the environmental or occupational health issue, information on how to identify the problem, and a listing of resources on each topic.
