Occupational Health Status Research of Hired Farm Workers: A Community Based Approach

Author: Mines, Richard

The purpose of this report is to document the methods and procedures utilized in a cross-sectional survey of the occupational health status of hired farm workers in two distinctive agricultural regions of the United States. Unusual in many aspects, the principal components of this survey were developed in a participatory process involving epidemiologists, biostatiticians, community-based health service providers, health educators, and lay health advisors. As is more fully described below, the survey instrument, sampling procedures, recruitment and training of interviewers, and administration of the survey in the communities of interest occurred over a several year period with all participants providing contributions to each aspect of the survey.
