Safety and Health for Production Education

Author: Murphy, Dennis J.
Date Published: 1992

Food and fiber production is a complex process in and of itself. It becomes even more complex when it is considered within the context of safety and health issues. Basic terminology is unclear and confusing, there is considerable variation among the nation's production agriculture operators and workers, and there are economic and socio-psychological factors present in production agriculture not normally found with other occupational groups. One purpose of this chapter is to bring clarity to these issues. A second purpose is to describe the range of enterprises, activities, and populations encompassed by production agriculture. A third purpose is to describe the unique attributes affecting safety and health within the nation's most basic industry.
