Salmonella Arizona Infections in Latinos Associated with Rattlesnake Folk Medicine

This report discusses the prevalence of Salmonella Arizona infection in users of rattlesnake capsules, an old popular folk remedy of Mexico and Central America made of dried and ground rattlesnake flesh and used for a variety of ailments. It reviews the surveillance data for Salmonella Arizona and conducted a case-control study to determine the magnitude of this public health problem. An average of 18 cases per year of Salmonella Arizona were reported in L.A. County between 1980 and 1987. The majority of the cases reporting snake capsule ingestion had underlying illnesses like AIDS, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer.
