Washington State Migrant Education: Physical Examination

Author: Terry Bergeson M.D
Date Published: 2000

This document assesses the health needs of migrant farmworker children. These needs fall into several categories. The most prevalent of these is dental caries. The presence of dental caries is usually a reflection of poor dental hygiene and/or inadequate diet. Dietary inadequacies are also reflected in the statistics in anemia and obesity. Early detection of such conditions and referral to a health care practitioner is the focal point of the Migrant Education Examinations. Physical hygiene and environmental conditions are also concerns. Inherent in these findings is the implication of the need for ongoing educational efforts at school and in the home. Positive health habits and attitudes can be dramatically increased through a continuing educational effort. The document goes on to describe the Washington State Program for Migrant Children's Education, the Migrant Education Physical Examination process and health screening standards.
