A pilot survey of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of migrant and seasonal farmworkers regarding cancer in general and cervical and skin cancer in particular was conducted in four mid-Atlantic states--Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The surveys were collected through a convenience sample design using one-to-one interviews. There were 578 completed surveys in both English and Spanish. Most of the Spanish speakers had immigrated from Mexico and several Central American countries to do farm work in the United States. Three general questions on cervical cancer were asked of both men and women respondents and were followed by more specific questions asked of only the women respondents. The results of the general questions, as well as the more specific ones, suggest that knowledge and understanding about cervical cancer and Pap smears are fairly low among the farmworkers surveyed. A follow-up study to this pilot and an educational intervention are planned.
