CDC Fact Book FY 1998

Author: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Date Published: 1998

This Fact Book offers a glimpse of the diversity and depth of activities of the CDC, looking to a future of healthy people in a healthy world--through prevention. CDC is 7,000 employees, working together as a strong and creative team to promote health and quality of life by preventing disease, injury, and disability. As we near the 21st Century, we have made four assumptions about the future that are reflected in CDC's programs and activities. Our health care resources and energy must balance treatment and prevention in the next millennium. The world will develop important new technologies not just in medicine, but in public health. Microorganisms will continue to emerge, adapt, and change in order to survive. Changes in human behavior and demographics will challenge us in preventing disease, environmental hazards, and injuries. This booklet describes in concise terms the organization and activities of CDC as they strive with colleagues--state and local health agencies; voluntary, professional, and community-based organizations; and other new partners--to improve the health of people throughout the nation and the world.
