Migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States experience very low incomes and harsh working conditions during their active years. But what happens to them in old age? In particular, where do they find housing? Securing decent and affordable housing is very difficult for most young, active farmworkers. In retirement, faced with reduced incomes and the likely disabilities of advancing age, are older farmworkers likely to encounter even greater difficulties? Do still working older agricultural laborers also face barriers to finding livable housing at low or moderate cost? This report provides an overview of both the older and general farmworker populations; examines the few facts that are known about the housing needs of, as well as housing opportunities for, retired and elderly agricultural workers; and delves especially into private housing options for the older farmworker.
