Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can be associated with serious complications and premature death, but persons with diabetes can take measures to reduce the likelihood of such occurrences. This fact sheet describes the various types of diabetes, their symptoms, prevalence, incidence, and mortality rates, and a sampling of other demographic information regarding the disease.
