Preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Author: American Dental Association
Date Published: 1998

This patient education material discusses the causes and symptoms of baby bottle tooth decay, risk behaviors associated with it, and prevention and treatment options. Decay in infants and children is called baby bottle tooth decay. It can destroy the teeth and most often occurs in the upper front teeth. Decay occurs when sweetened liquids are given and are left clinging to an infant's teeth for long periods. Bacteria in the mouth use these sugars as food, and then produce the acid that attack the teeth.
