SALTA, An Environmental Justice and Community Organizing Training Manual

Author: Environmental Health Coalition
Date Published: 1996

The link between toxic chemical exposure and health is poorly understood by the scientific community and often dismissed as unsubstantiated. Communities throughout the country have been forced to organize and fight to protect themselves. These struggles may be focused around a specific proposal but, more often, the most serious health threats come from existing polluters and poor planning. Communities of color and poor communities generally carry the heaviest toxic pollution burden and may not even be aware of all of the hazards facing them. SALTA was designed to prepare community residents to deal with environmental crises and ongoing/historical problems. It equips people with tools to use for both long and short-term strategies. SALTA was designed by and for Latinas; utilizes concepts of popular participatory education; is a two-tiered process of training peer educators (Promotoras); progresses from easy to grasp issues of household toxins to more complex industrial toxic issues; has been thoroughly tested in two rounds of trainings, and can be easily adapted to meet your local issues and resources.
