Corazon de mi Vida: Child Passenger Safety Kit

Author: Barrera, Rebeca Maria, M.A.; Lobo, Bibi
Date Published: 2000

In the Latino community, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children between five and fourteen years of age. Several studies have begun to document child passenger safety issues by ethnicity, race and sex. These studies indicate that Hispanics have lower rates of child safety seat and seat belt use than non-Hispanic Whites. Corazon de mi Vida is a new initiative to inform Latino families, childcare providers and the community about child passenger safety. The model uses bilingual and culturally relevant educational materials and community outreach strategies. It was conceptualized and created with the understanding that to be successful, the initiative had to connect with the community by using images, messages and strategies that made sense to all Latinos in the United States--Mexican-American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Salvadoran or others. Materials in the program are tied to an activity that connects to celebrations in the community. The activities invite Latino families to participate and to partner with others in keeping children safe. This item is not available for distribution.
