The Toolbox: Agricultural Tools, Equipment, Machinery, and Buildings for Farmers and Ranchers with Physical Disabilities

Author: Breaking New Ground Resource Center
Date Published: 2000

The Breaking Ground Resource Center as been committed to serving farmers, ranchers, and agricultural workers with physical disabilities who have desired to remain actively involved in farm/ranch operations and related enterprises. One outcome of the Center's early efforts was the revelation that very little technical information existed to assist those who wished to modify agricultural equipment or worksites for greater accessibility. Since few such modifications had been documented, the Center observed that farmers were often "reinventing the wheel" or performing tasks in an unsafe manner because they lacked access to the ideas and solutions of others who had overcome problems similar to theirs. Recognizing the need, the Center began to collect information on ideas and products intended to make agriculture more accessible for producers with disabilities. The Toolbox includes both commercially available products and ideas from producers themselves. The purpose of each of these manuals has not been to provide ready-made solutions for every situation, but rather to plant concept "seeds" that will stimulate producers with physical disabilities to develop solutions that meet their specific situations.
