Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Powerlessness, Part 8-C, Who is Responsible?

Author: Subcommittee on Migratory Labor, Committee on Labor and Public Welfare, United States Senate
Date Published: 1971

The Subcommittee on Migratory Labor conducted public hearings in Washington, D.C., during the 91st Congress on "Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Powerlessness." This is the 8th in that series of hearings. A migrant camp is a microcosm of nearly every social ill, every injustice, and everything shameful in our society: poverty almost beyond belief, rampant disease and malnutrition, racism, filth and squalor, pitiful children drained of pride and hope, exploitation and powerlessness, and the inability or unwillingness of public and private institutions, at all levels, to erase this terrible blight on our country. Perhaps our greatest shame is how little we have done in this decade.
