Labor Utilization in the South Texas Citrus Harvest Labor Market

Author: Hicks, Brian; Whitmore, Susan
Date Published: 1976

This report contains the results of a survey of the South Texas citrus harvest labor market conducted during the 1975-1976 harvest season. 5 packing houses, accounting for 40.7 percent of the citrus harvested in South Texas in the 1975-1976 harvest season, cooperated in the research. Data were collected on 411 groves and 1,376 harvesters working 20,189 hours. This research has a 3-fold objective. First, since many of those involved hold different views of the characteristics of this labor market, researchers have attempted to describe the harvesting system and its participants. Second, the data has been analyzed to discover the factors affecting productivity and inefficiencies in the system as it now operates. Third, recommendations have been developed for improving the system so as to maximize benefits to growers, packing houses and harvesters.
