The Florida Citrus Labor Market

Author: Hudson, Bruce George
Date Published: 1979

This study is an analysis of the Florida Citrus Industry's harvesting labor force. Initially the intent was to view the Florida citrus harvesting labor force in the context of Piore and Doeringer's theory of primary and secondary labor markets. The composition and organization of this labor market in combination with some recent events in its operation make it especially suitable for the study. The Florida citrus harvesting labor force is typified by extremely high turnover rates, unfavorable working conditions, irregular work habits, little or no chance for advancement, and the employee alienation associated with the labor contract system. With these characteristics the Florida citrus harvesting labor market epitomizes Piore and Doeringer's concept of a secondary labor market.
