This study aimed to explore the effect of the 1983 Washington State Supreme Court ruling that expanded farmworker coverage under the state's compensation system. Researchers examined computer tapes containing data on all claims filed in Washington from Jan. 1, 1982 and Dec. 31, 1986. Workers compensation coverage, utilization of the system, and treatment of farmworker claims were all examine before from before and after the court's ruling. Results show a substantial increase in the acceptance of claims filed by farmworkers following the ruling that removed a statutory restriction unique to workers in this sector.
