Author: National Center for Farmworker Health, Inc.
Date Published: 2001

This issue of Farmworker News contains four articles. The first, "Tuberculosis Continues to Cause Sickness and Death," explains the nature of Tuberculosis--what it is, how it is caused, and what its symptoms are. It continues, emphasizing the need for testing and detection, and directing the readers to call TB Net for more information. The following article, "Lung Cancer--Not Smoking Can Save Your Life," describes lung cancer--how it is caused, and risk behaviors (like smoking) that are associated with it. It goes on to describe its symptoms and the effects of second-hand smoke. The third article, "Immigrants Can Apply for most Benefits Without Affecting Their Legalization: La 'Mica' o 'Green Card'," explains why immigrants can apply for most benefits without any fear that taking such benefits will harm their application for legalization. The final article, "Cantaloupe Picker Dies of Heat Stroke," recounts the tale of a farmworker who died from heat stroke. Occupational safety and health are emphasized as the tale is followed up by four suggestions to avoid a reoccurrence of the incident.
