Dental Infection Control Assessment

Author: National Migrant Resource Program
Date Published: 1994

Report that is the cumulative result of a project undertaken during the spring and fall of 1993. 18 dental sites were visited in migrant and community health centers to determine the level of compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations and guidelines related to infection control and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The surveyors found dental practices in migrant and community health centers to be at risk for OSHA fines and employees to be at possible risk for exposure to communicable disease. It was generally found that they lacked resources to be optimally trained and staffed, and special considerations hampered attempts at full compliance with infection control practices. Areas of greatest concern include: lack of providers, absence of space for laboratories, x-ray developing and employee changing rooms, antiquated equipment, and lack of time to establish infection control plans and familiarizing employees with the plan.
