Author: Belzer, Elen J.
Date Published: 1989

If your are a family practice resident, a medical student considering family practice, or a practicing family physician interested in relocation, you are going through a critical decision-making process about where you will practice. Because family physicians are in demand, your services are needed throughout the United States, in all types of settings. But as you explore your options, the American Academy of Family Physicians encourages you to give full consideration to opportunities in America's small and rural communities. This report presents current information about rural lifestyle, environmental and practice issues that may affect your practice site decision. Some of the information may surprise you, and some of your perceptions about rural life and practice may change. After all, rural life and practice may change. After all, rural family practice has evolved significantly during the last decade, and many family physicians and their families are finding rural life more desirable today than ever before. While attempting to present a balanced and honest look at the realities of rural life and practice, problems in rural areas will be viewed as challenges rather than as obstacles. As evidenced by the successful efforts of the many family physicians who currently practice in rural settings, you, as a family physician, can play a major role in helping to identify problems and instigate positive change. To determine whether rural practice is right for you, checklists and guidelines are provided to guide you through your decision making process.
