Coordinating California's Farm Worker Services

Author:
Date Published: 1992

This report by California's Farm Worker Services Coordinating Council lays an essential foundation for improving the state's delivery of services to farmworkers. When the council was created, it was charged with identifying issues of concern to farmworkers and working toward helpful policies and agencies for farmworkers so it held six hearings to get farmworker testimony. Among problems faced by farmworkers, the council lists chronic underemployment, changing migration patterns (in which more migrants are settling in the U.S. instead of returning to Mexico), which affects the state's ability to meet farmworker needs. From its conclusions, the council recommends the improvement or implementation of: local farmworker committees, toll-free 800 numbers, resource directories, ESL alternatives, agricultural employment fairs, seasonal farmworker housing, and emergency response, among others.
