Tuberculin Skin Tests: Tips on Taking and Interpreting

Author: Bass, John B.
Date Published: 1986

This small booklet is informs and gives advice to health care professionals on taking and interpreting tuberculin skin tests, which the authors say is necessary because most physicians aren't familiar with tuberculosis. The journal asks questions of two medical doctors who respond with knowledgeable advice on diagnostic screening for tuberculosis, such as the best screening test for TB, what to look for in a reaction size, and several factors that can possibly cause confusion in the diagnosis of TB. The doctors also discuss the benefits and risks of preventive therapy, how to monitor for side effects of TB drugs, and how to manage TB during pregnancy. Lack of familiarity with Tuberculosis causes an occasional case to be overlooked. Variability in reading of the test, the booster phenomenon, and sensitivity to nontuberculosis mycobacteria can trip up physicians.
