This report discusses what pesticides are, discusses their various functions and classifications, provides an overview of the scope of pesticide use and pesticide-related illnesses, and delineates the purpose of this pesticide training manual. The manual dicusses how pesticides are an extraordinarily diverse group of chemicals and biological agents the command our attention for a number of reasons. First, most pesticides are inherently toxic by design and are intended to disrupt basic biological mechanisms. Second, we intentionally apply pesticides to our food and our homes. Third, humans are the primary target organisms. Finally, the realities of the agricultural workplace virtually guarantee substantial human exposure to pesticides.
